Once Lost,

I can only imagine how frightening that was for you. I was raped by 3 men when i was 12, but I got to go home. It breaks my heart to think that, as a child, you didnt have a way out, or a safe place... It sounds like you survived and made yourself a safe place against the odds. i know that this is not always the case with everyone, so i hope we can each raise enough awareness to make sure this stuff never happens to any child ever again.
Thanks for sharing your story.

My dear Once Lost.

I read your post and as a man it makes me sick to the core of my being to know that women like yourself have been treated this way, let alone as a child... This is why we exist, itsnotmyfault that is. I have traveled the world and witnessed some unspeakable things, but it never fails to break my heart when I hear this kind of testimony. You are not alone, you are much loved and I pray life will keep getting better and better despite the torment this must be for you at times, even now. Thank you for your bravery in sharing this information on our blog. I concur, something must be done.

Kim, that's heart breaking- but that means he too was a victim of trafficking - trafficking doesn't just mean they were sold by strangers or friends - it includes parents as well.

Sadly enough though, in some states, the police turn a blind eye to runaways and then, when they are raped/abused/used, they tell us it's our own fault.

I remember at 15 sitting in the Houston Police Department, having called the National Runaway Hotline for help. They sent HPD... When I told HPD of what I had went through (being raped time and time again by numerous men, and being told that "dead bodies are easy to get rid of here in Texas" when I would say no), HPD told me it was MY fault that I got into that situation because I was a runaway. He said I deserved it, and maybe next time, I wouldn't runaway.

And no, sorry, I wasn't running away from the perfect home... I was running away from foster care, and that itself is another hell for teens.

Police need more sensitivity training when handling runaways who have been raped, prostituted out, or trafficked for sex.

As an adult now, I was one of the children who was abused by multiple men, and had some of the men who abused me allow others in on the abuse and to document the abuse through photographs that they kept stored away.

To this day, the flash of a Polaroid camera still echos through my mind. I will never forget the living hell I had to go through as a child (younger than 12) being molested time and time again. I will NEVER forget the dozens of people I had to sleep with to stay off the streets and survive as a young teen (13-16)...

Something needs to be done.

There's a terrific book everyone should share with their friends and age-appropriate children: "Sold", a harrowing first-person account of trafficking, rape, and being freed. It's by Patricia McCormick and it's the only book of its kind I've seen. Highly recommended for those who want to learn more about these issues. Proceeds from the book supports Anuradha Koirala's anti-trafficking organization, Maiti Nepal.

There is another problem in the U.S. What about the kids that are sold for sex by their birth parents? Our adopted son, now age 15 has to live the rest of his life with the damage done by his birth parents. What about those kids? Some are sexually abused as young as INFANTS. What about those kids? Some are sold so their parents can have drug or alcohol money. How sick. Some are also abused sexually by their birth parents or relatives. How sad. What about THEM? Please everyone PRAY for those children.
